Boot Camp Adult Functional Fitness

without comments

“you have two choices when it comes to improving your health & wellness – either take the initiative to make changes or keep making excuses”

If choosing to make changes, then Exchange Fitness would like to  help.

Well, I guess we have to use “Boot Camp” as a marketing tool, but a more appropriate term may be Adult Functional Fitness, because that is what we are trying to teach. Functional everyday movements, like squats, lunges, presses, push ups and pull ups, that will allow you to become stronger, move freely, efficiently and without pain. Once we have these movement patterns down we can challenge you more with different methods of resistance and stability.

Unlike other “boot camps” you will not see the buzzwords of guaranteed fat loss, inches away, melt away the pounds or spot reduction. While we understand that weight loss is a common and desired result of increasing one’s physical fitness, we feel very strongly that the emphasis should be on improving your physical and cardiovascular strength and endurance.

Ask yourself this – Who is more physically fit, the person who lost 5 pounds in one month, or the person who in the same 4 week period is now able to jump rope continuously for 90 seconds, pull up their own body weight a few times, do full push ups and weighted squats? Who is more mentally fit, the person who just lost 5 pounds but still thinks they need to lose more because the fitness magazine models look so much “healthier” than them, or the person who accepts that human bodies come in all kinds of shapes and sizes, and that next month resolves to continue to improve upon their baseline physical results by showing up to class and working hard, plus maybe even sharing success tips at one of our monthly social nights over a few beer or glasses of wine & appies?

Personally, I will go with contestant number two. I think you will find that by concentrating on improvements (and we use these baselines exercises as a measure) in various exercises, and by coming in and working hard for 45 or 60 minutes three days per week, that the weight and body fat loss stuff will simply take care of itself over time, without you even thinking about it (and hopefully not obsessing about it).

What sets this camp apart from others?

Class sizes are limited so that you are observed, supervised and given different exercise options at all times – this isn’t done aerobics style where 20+ people mimic the instructor and are left to their own devices to figure out if the form is correct. The class mandate is full body functional conditioning, with emphasis on proper exercise technique through optimal biomechanics and movement strategies.

Classes are a hybrid of group circuit training, cardio, core, yoga, weight training and plyometrics, that builds in intensity over the duration.  All levels of fitness are welcome, as exercises can be modified to challenge everyone. We will be using a variety of equipment, including: resistance bands, weights, Kettlebells, BOSU ball, stability ball, speed ladders, TRX, agility hurdles, medicine balls, and of course, the great outdoors.

but remember – the most important piece of exercise equipment is you!
